Photography is deeply ingrained in Canadian culture and society and thereby is an effective artistic medium through which to explore the experience of Canadian life.  MASS: Culture and Society Exhibit 2a uses photo-based art to explore the cross influence and blurred boundaries between photography and the constructs of society and culture.

Society is created in part by institutions that structure our physical and psychological environment.  Institutions have a domain over issues such as education, land use planning and the media.  Culture is life within or beyond those institutions: the people who manifest heritage, tradition, beliefs, customs and art. 

There are three sub themes within MASS, the built environment – constructed reality, the populated Canadian landscape; appropriated images – taken from popular culture; and cultural images – diversity found within the imagined and physical structures of the environment.  These themes are closely tied to the creation and definition of our environment while at the same time being closely linked to the practice of photography.
